Well, friends, if you are wondering what could possibly make this purple-crazed photographer even happier than a purple camera bag??? a PURPLE CAMERA of course!!!

When I found out that this violet colored beauty has hit the market, it stopped me dead in my tracks. It has a fixed lens and shoots in film (just like in the old days!). Don't worry, I won't be whipping it out to shoot any weddings, but it sure gives my all-dressed-in-black camera a run for its money :)

Hello again friends! I'm proud to introduce you to Jamie, Jamie and Jaedon. Jamie and Jamie are snuggly, silly and oh so sweet on each other :). Jaedon was so excited that his dad chose Jamie to marry, that during his dad's proposal he asked her to join his family too. GOSH!!! Stories like that make me cry. Thank goodness my camera has "auto-focus" because when Jamie was telling me their engagement story, I really couldn't see through the view-finder anymore...

Congratulations Jamie + Jamie on your engagement! Your story has just begun! :)

Hello friends! I would like to introduce you to part of my family...Tim, Kelly, Brennan & Abby Nordstrom! We don't get to see them as much as we'd like, but they spent Thanksgiving '09 with us and the leaves were perfect for taking pictures...yep, I couldn't resist. I dragged my family out once again to be subjects for my latest crazy idea...uh, I mean, PROFESSIONAL MODEL SHOOT. Thankfully, it didn't take much bribing once I mentioned we would jump in the leaves :)

What I'm reading right now...

My favorite part of packing for a trip is choosing the books that will accompany me. It's like selecting which friends you will travel with. Books, for me, contain some of the world's best ideas, secrets and stories. Ideas can take me on a whirlwind of adventure. At least, that's what I say in place of confessing to the truth about my ADD...and how sidetracked I can become over something sparkly...

Back to my point...um...books! Right! Reading LOTS of books makes me very happy :). I love a good story and adventure. I also love a good book recommendation...please reply if you have read a good book lately, and tell us what it was!

Here's a peek at what I've been reading lately, top to bottom:

Playing for Pizza, John Grisham: a fun change from the twist-and-turns, edge-of-your-seat books he's known for.
Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert: I am only a third of the way through it, but IT IS SOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!! Throw caution to the wind and find out who you really are.
The Zookeeper's Wife, Diane Ackerman: a more serious book about a family that hides people in their zoo from the Nazis.
Tender at the Bone, Ruth Reichl: Ruth is one of my favorite authors, this book is about her growing up. As an adult, she is a food critic and wrote a very funny book about her adventures in disguises so that she could critique restaurants honestly. Check out: "Garlic & Sapphires" for these great stories! Bonus: these books include her cooking recipes!!!

Hello friends! Yesterday my hubby and I had dinner with some wonderful friends & clients at Hula's Chinese BBQ. {Side note -- if you haven't enjoyed the wonderfulness of Hula's you must RUN--don't walk--to the nearest Hula's and try it out for yourself!!!} Anyways, I'll get back to the story...

We were nearing the end of dinner and the waitress delivered the fortune cookies to our table. I have always enjoyed reading the fortunes. But I've never really thought there was much to them...UNTIL NOW.

I opened my fortune and it read: "Focus on the color purple this week to bring you luck."

NO JOKE, people!!! I even took a photo for proof!!! (see above)

I suppose I was destined to love the color purple...and now I have hard evidence to prove it. It's not just an obsession...I was born for this!!! Ok, I'll try not to go completely overboard, but now I have justification for all kinds of purple purchases!!! Forever 21 here I come! :)

New Wedding:: Amanda + Mike {Fort Bragg Wedding Photographer}

Hello, friends! Welcome to Fort Bragg, CA!!! The beaches are warm & sunny and it could not be a more beautiful day for a wedding. Amanda + Mike tied the knot here on Monday, May 10, 2010. I have absolutely no doubt that this couple is for keeps.

The weather was a bit, challenging, shall we say...the photos here make it look like it was perfect...during the ceremony, however, is a different story. During the ceremony, it went like this: rain + wind = HORIZONTAL RAIN. Guess where I was shooting? INTO the rain, of course!!!

Amanda + Mike proudly said their vows despite the crazy weather {see below} and after the ceremony it cleared up beautifully...it makes me think about how marriage is sometimes...sometimes it's sunny and warm, and sometimes you are standing in the rain. No matter what, if you stand firmly together, the sun WILL come out again! :) Congratulations, Amanda + Mike!!!

New Engagement:: Katie + Gavin {Chico Wedding Photographer}

Hello again, friends! I am so pleased to introduce you to one of my dear friends, Katie. She and I met in college at Chico State and have kept in touch since we graduated. Katie is a wonderful girl and I am blessed to know her and call her my friend. Not too long ago, Katie called me and announced she had met THE GUY {girls, you know what I mean, right!??!!?} THE GUY! I think I nearly dropped my phone I was so excited for her.

Gavin keeps Katie laughing. Katie encourages silliness. I don't think either of them could have found a better match. Honestly, I've never seen Katie this happy before and I am so glad that Gavin is the reason why.

Sightings of Purple {feeding my obsession yet again!!}

Hello, friends! Some days, I cannot believe the crazy things that happen...Yesterday, I met with a bride and her fiance to chat about her wedding. She happened to be wearing a purple shirt...{I thought to myself,...what a cute shirt! I don't have a purple shirt like THAT yet...hmmm...I wonder where she got it?} All of a sudden...MISSION OF THE NEWEST PURPLE SHIRT has commenced in my head....

I look down at my outfit and to my surprise...I was NOT wearing any purple!!! HOW could this have happened??? Then, my bride tells me she wore that purple shirt JUST FOR ME, because she knows I love purple.

I think I stopped breathing for a minute, I can't remember. I was speechless. What a thoughtful gift! This bride went out of her way to do something nice for me by wearing MY favorite color.

To that bride {if she is reading this}, my dearest thank you. It really did mean a lot to me :)

Hello, friends! I am excited for you to meet Jennifer & David! Picture this: .....they got engaged on St. Patrick's Day on the beach at sunset! How perfect? Meet Betsy & Hudson. Two super-fun happy people. Together they love traveling (road trips, especially!) and making each other laugh. Good thing they both have the same sense of humor! They are a delight to have coffee with (if you can tie them down for a few minutes...) and if it's their choice, it's always Peet's Coffee! I cannot wait for Betsy & Hudson's wedding this fall at The White Ranch. It's truly a beautiful location :).

Happy Friday everyone! Today I would like to share something very dear to my heart with you: my favorite color, PURPLE. If you didn't know already, I love the color purple. I own many articles of clothing that are purple, many things purple, heck, I even painted the largest wall in my studio purple!

Ok, so this might have been going overboard, but when I saw the new Kelly Moore camera bags, I fell in love with the style. Then I found out that the bags come in [drum roll please]...yup! Purple! I had one bought in 15 mins flat.

They look great from the outside---nothing obvious to give away "Hey! I'm carrying about $3-4,000 worth of camera gear here!!!" I love that! It's a little dressier and stands out from my work clothes. When you're wearing all black and then carrying a bunch of black camera bags, black gets a bit boring.

I'm looking forward to using it this summer shooting weddings! To my brides who didn't choose the color purple as their wedding color, I hope you don't mind if I bring my purple bag anyways :)

DISNEY: LIKE A DRUG I CANNOT KICK

As I have spent these last two days in America's "Happiest Place on Earth," a few ideas have occurred to me...

(1) Disney is not just an amusement park, people come there from all over the world, paying about $75 for a day's worth of experiencing Disney's Magic. Now, what is this Disney Magic? It seems to be an experience that's fun and full of fantasy and escape from our everyday lives.

(2) There is never a shortage of new things to discover and behold, even for the seasoned visitor. Disney has penty of "secret" knowledge that one can only find out in bits and pieces...and then you still don't feel like you have the whole story.

(3) Disney seriously excells in storytelling. When you approach a ride, you walk through a series of roped mazes that leads you through a series of bits and pieces of information about what lies ahead. These tasty morsels of information beckon you further. Now, you are so hooked you HAVE to find out what's beyond...before you know it, you're walking off the ride in a trance. You feel like you have just been let in on a secret that Disney has shared only with YOU.

Now, if you will excuse me, I am off to ride Thunder Mountain for the 6th time :) Still can't get enough of this stuff!

LIFE-LIKE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

I was just emailed by one of my clients about the Christmas Decorations they had. Check out what they said...

"Well, there is good and bad news about my Christmas Decorations this year...

Good news that I truly outdid myself this year!
The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever. Great stories. But two things made me take it down.

First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by.

Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard.

So it was fun while it lasted...:)"

I saw a truly extrordinary movie this last weekend...The Blind Side. And it's not extrordiary just because my favorite actress is in it {Sandra Bullock}...the movie was based on a true story. I LOVE movies/stories/books that are based on true stories! True stories have a way of opening my eyes to see more and more of this great world we live in. Go see the movie!

Federally funded ad campaign holds up value of marriage

So, I was watching TV last night and this story popped on the screen. I sat up. Read on...

The average age at first marriage is now almost 26 for women and 28 for men. And a growing percentage of Americans aren't marrying at all: Provisional federal statistics released Tuesday report 7.1 marriages per 1,000 people in 2008, down from 10 per 1,000 in 1986.

Faced with such numbers, the federal government is funding a $5 million national media campaign that launches this month, extolling the virtues of marriage for those ages 18 to 30.
"We're not telling people 'Get married' but 'Don't underestimate the benefits of marriage,' " says Paul Amato, a Pennsylvania State University sociologist and adviser to the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center, which is spearheading the campaign.

I realized today that I left my phone charger at home. I packed an extra (CHARGED!!!!) battery and my charger in a cute little watermellon bag.

and left it at home.

So, now I'm in search of someone who might have the same phone that would let me use the charger, or I'll be buying another one.

So, with all this sunny weather, I'm anxious for the massive annual photographer conference in Vegas! I head to Vegas right after Valentine's Day and I cannot wait!!

I'm trying to set up a photo shoot with some models in the Old Vegas Signs Graveyard. Don't worry, it's not spooky :) It's the resting place of all the old Vegas signs from previous casinos, hotels, etc. that are no longer needed.

This time of year I am so thankful for family, great friends and great business. I officially opened my studio less than a year ago. Going out on a limb, not sure of what would come later, trusting that this decision was correct. To my wonderful suprise, this year has been a great adventure. I have had the pleasure to work with many great clients that I now can call my friends too.

I'm looking forward to doing it all over again next year!

Have you heard about The BIG Event? It's a wonderful dinner & auction fundraiser for our local Big Brothers Big Sisters charity. It's important to me to support local charity, and this organization is one I feel strongly about.

In a nutshell, they pair up youth with mentors. And they do it well. This is a free service to any child who wants a mentor. The best part is that it REALLY does make a difference in a child's life. I had a realization the other night. As I was talking with a great friend of mine, we were discussing emotion, and what allows us to capture it the right way. How can I stop time and still illustrate so much?

As my friend helped me realize, it takes a pretty decent amount of trust to let your guard down in front of someone you don't know. It takes even more trust to allow them see you vulnerable. It takes EVEN MORE TRUST to allow that person to photograph it. Gosh, these clients of mine are entrusting me with a lot!

I was immediately humbled that strangers would allow me into such a personal place so quickly. I knew my job was personal (duh!), but now I feel it takes on a whole new meaning of "personal".

Why start a Studio?

I started my studio, Poise Photography, because of my passion for capturing people's personality. I still can't believe I can stop time and relive a single moment again and again. A glance, a smile, a tear, whatever it may be, it's part of our journey called life.

I realized early on that I loved photography. Then, to my surprise, (after many classes and many hours practicing with Derek Geer, my mentor) I actually understood it. I understood how the camera sees things and how it works. All of a sudden, I understood how this tool worked.

It was in that moment that I knew I had to try to build a business. I knew that if I didn't at least TRY IT, I would always wonder if I missed out on an incredible journey that was meant for me.Now, only 3 1/2 years into business, I am so thankful I took the road unknown. I have had the pleasure to meet some wonderful people that I now call friends.

Destination Wedding in Cancun!!!

This was our first destination wedding on a beach in a foreign country, wow, what a great experience. We are so honored to have been there to share this special day with the bride & groom.

Beautiful bride, handsome groom, white sandy beach, does it get any better than this? I hope you all enjoy looking at these photos as much as we enjoyed taking them! :)

Getting involved to help just feels so good, doesn't it? I have recently collaborated with a company who wants to recognize social workers and the families they help put back together. Social workers to a lot that we don't see, but to the child that gets to live with his mom or dad again, that means the world!

When was the last time you were rewarded for doing something right? Let me check...um, not lately!

I have decided to photograph these newly-re-united families to give them a tangible reminder of their new beginning together, to show them what they've worked for and to reward their efforts. With each family I meet, it gives me hope that there really are families out there that try and accomplish the best for them and for their children.

Taking some time off...

This week, I'm taking some time off to relax with my husband. It's nice to not have any distractions and just chill. Sometimes it's tough to take just a sliver of time off...why do we work so hard? Is it really worth it when we get back to our day to day lives? I think our culture puts WAY too much pressure on making money and with that we lose some of the enjoyment of day to day life.

WPPI in Las Vegas

This past week in Las Vegas has been great. Molly and I have been here visiting the biggest photography trade show in the country [that we know of]. It's huge! We've been soaking up all kinds of new and innovative ideas that we are gearing up to implement for this year.

We will be launching a completely new album style in the next month or so--as soon as we have all the details nailed down, we will post photos and info.

This is a shot I took outside the Paris casino. Vegas is full of great photo ops! We shall return to CA soon!

Welcome to my blog! This is the place to read about all my crazy adventures, newest work and ideas :)

The past few days I've been in Las Vegas at WPPI. The trade show was the main focus of the trip. The trade show was HUGE. Soaked up lots of great ideas, met new vendors and saw some of the newest gizmos and gagets in the industry.

Now I'm feeling very refreshed and ready for wedding season '08!
